چکیده

Thermoacoustic computed tomography (thermoacoustic CT) has thepotential to become a mayor non-invasive medical imaging method. Inthis paper we derive a general mathematical framework of a novel mea-suring setup introduced in [5]. It takes measuring data of line detectorsand offers better imaging resolution than conventional approaches basedon point-data approximation. We show that the three dimensional ther-moacoustic imaging problem reduces to the mathematical problem of re-constructing the initial data of the two dimensional wave equation fromboundary measurements of its solution. We derive and analyze an analyticreconstruction formula which allows for fast numerical implementation.

Thermoacoustic Tomography Arising in Brain Imaging

We study the mathematical model of thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography when the sound speed has a jump across a smooth surface. This models the change of the sound speed in the skull when trying to image the human brain. We derive an explicit inversion formula in the form of a convergent Neumann series under the assumptions that all singularities from the support of the source reach the...

Fast Reconstruction Algorithms for the Thermoacoustic Tomography in Certain Domains with Cylindrical or Spherical Symmetries

We propose three fast algorithms for solving the inverse problem of the thermoacoustic tomography corresponding to certain acquisition geometries. Two of these methods are designed to process the measurements done with point-like detectors placed on a circle (in 2D) or a sphere (in 3D) surrounding the object of interest. The third inversion algorithm works with the data measured by the integrat...

Frequency Domain Reconstruction in Photo- and Thermoacoustic Tomography with Line Detectors

This article is concerned with a version of photoacoustic computed tomography, that uses line detectors (instead of point-like ones) for the recording of induced acoustical data. The three dimensional imaging problem, consisting in reconstructing the unknown density function from recorded data, is reduced to a series of two dimensional problems: First, the initial data of the two dimensional wa...

Improving tangential resolution with a modified delay-and-sum reconstruction algorithm in photoacoustic and thermoacoustic tomography.

Spatial resolution in photoacoustic and thermoacoustic tomography is ultrasound transducer (detector) bandwidth limited. For a circular scanning geometry the axial (radial) resolution is not affected by the detector aperture, but the tangential (lateral) resolution is highly dependent on the aperture size, and it is also spatially varying (depending on the location relative to the scanning cent...

Mathematics of thermoacoustic tomography

Computerized tomography has had a huge impact on medical diagnostics. Numerous methods of tomographic medical imaging have been developed and are being developed (e.g., the ‘standard’ X-ray, single-photon emission, positron emission, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, electrical impedance, optical) [62, 67, 84–86]. The designers of these modalities strive to increase the image resolution and contr...
